Precis

in this Article 'How Pixar Fosters Collective Creativity' by E.Catmull present the empirical structure of Pixar and their creative process, structure and culture. Pixar never bought scripts, they entrusted their people to be creative and lead the business forward. However Catmull comments the tendency to focus on what has worked before leads to a feeling of similarity amongst movie releases. So Pixar advocate hiring good, talented, creative people who can work together. Extraordinary people in an extraordinary business acts like a magnet for talent wanting to join. Pixars began its business as an independent company in 1986. and everything was working effectively until the development of Toy Story 2, due to a change in creative directorship due to Disneys' acquisition. This resulted in a difference of standards being implemented across the business. As a result the team encountered issues and as it was precieved the A team was brought in to solve the issue facing Toy Story 2. Pixars philosophy was to get good creative people and bet big on them. After the issues Pixar implemented a number of different fail safes within their business that both supported and enabled the creative process. The implementation of a peer culture across the business,  The brain trust consisting of great creatives, Dailies (Daily standups). In a big to encourage collaboration Pixar enabled a culture where everyone could speak to anyone, it must be safe to offer ideas and and they must stay close to innovations in the academic area. The notion that management should be able to walk in to a room and be surprised was a culture Pixar were hoping to enable.

Reflection

When reflecting on the document there was a number of points both myself and my classmates found with the reading. Firstly the main point we notes was while the article is a fairly light read and quiet and enjoyable one there is a moment of deep rooted level playing, in effect Catmull noted and A and B team and stated that mediocre people will effectively do a mediocre job. This creative team is certainly something I would love to enjoy and both be apart of, the pursuit of perfection aided through peer to peer reviews, the critiquing of ideas on a daily basis and the environment to feel comfortable to present unfinished projects. Pixar painted a beautiful working environment and a sense of freedom and development. While they accept they are not the finished article they are on their way to building a lasting open culture and an enduring business. A business that accepts it is not perfect but is pursuing perfection is a business I trust. And while coming from a creative background these kind of work environments really invigorate me.
