Precis

Clifford Geertz’s article, “Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight” (1971), observes cockfighting as a method to observe the Balinese culture and its core role defining the levels of society. Geertz presents this to the reader through his observation of the Cock, its symbolism, the its role it plays in defining social status and the loyalty within groups. Geertz’s article proposes how “Game” or ‘Social Events and Gathers’ can be observed to gain a deeper understanding and insight in to Cultural subtleties of a group of people. Geert’s states “Almost all matches are sociologically relevant” displaying the importance of the cock and cockfighting at the centre of society and in defining Balinese Social groups and structure.

Reflection

While reading this piece I began to notice subtle comparisons with nearly all societies, we have it in horse racing with owners, punters and even tipsters who all have their role in that sphere and this idea/observation could be applied across all of these occasions. It became concerting to me from reading the article that society as a whole and out drive for social stature is driven and predicated on Money and Title and the western society while it may appear different at its facade, it is quiet similar in its deeper construct. Is this the making of man? is there an inherent element that we all strive to find out place, to define our role and benefit financially from such?

I additionally found the style of research interesting as the reader embedded themselves in to the culture, however I dont feel you will get a real reflection of culture when you are observing people as no matter what this upsets the status quo, one may get close but you will never fully unlock the true authentic experience while it is known that you are observing and in effect detailing them.
